Professional Neutral

Honorable Sam Glasscock III (Ret.)

As a Delaware ADR Professional Neutral, Vice Chancellor Glasscock brings a commonsense approach to complex legal issues. Vice Chancellor Glasscock employs his vast subject matter expertise in private arbitration, including appointments by the Court of Chancery and expedited proceedings pursuant to the Delaware Rapid Arbitration Act. He is also available to co-mediate disputes with other Delaware ADR Professional Neutrals, acting as a neutral subject matter expert on discrete issues.  In appropriate cases, this co-mediation approach promotes principled negotiation by allowing for more robust discussion of litigation risks and informed assessments of parties’ positions. Whether penning an arbitration award or offering his candid views to mediating parties, he brings an encyclopedic knowledge of the law to bear on the issues before him, along with an unparalleled ability to distill that knowledge into accessible, practical results.

Vice Chancellor Glasscock’s reputation as a thoughtful decisionmaker developed over more than 25 years serving as a judicial officer on Delaware’s Court of Chancery.  He was appointed Vice Chancellor in 2011, having served in the role now known as Magistrate in Chancery since 1999.  In addition to his many years of service on Court of Chancery, he is a dedicated mentor and teacher, including at Duke University School of Law, University of Florida Levin College of Law, University of Georgia School of Law, Vanderbilt University Law School, Washington University in St. Louis School of Law, and Georgetown University Law Center.

Vice Chancellor Glasscock was born in Erie, Pennsylvania and spent most of his youth in Lewes, Delaware.  He received a B.A. in History from the University of Delaware in 1979, a J.D. from Duke University in 1983, and a Master’s Degree in Marine Policy from the University of Delaware in 1989.
